Patrice Douglas was sworn in Monday as the newest member of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. Twice.
Douglas, the former mayor of Edmond, repeated the standard oath of office for elected officials as administered by Oklahoma Chief Justice Steven Taylor.
Then she also vowed to uphold the statutory oath for members of the Corporation Commission.
Douglas was appointed to the post by Gov. Mary Fallin after former Commissioner Jeff Cloud resigned to take a job in the private sector.
“This is a dream come true,” Douglas said, as she looked out at an audience that included a large number of relatives in the Senate chamber.
Douglas said she was raised by her mother and grandmother to understand the importance of public service.
She hopes to educate state residents about what the commission does for Oklahoma, while preserving its natural and economic resources.
The governor said she chose Douglas to serve on the commission because of her background as a small-business owner, banker, attorney and politician.
Fallin praised Douglas for her passion and willingness to stand up for her beliefs. “Thank you so much for your dedication and your service,” Fallin said.
Douglas said she is looking forward to serving on the commission because its business affects everyone in the state.
“You have a difficult job, a difficult question coming to you every single day,” she said.
